Four kinds of pollutants in gravure printing
The essence of gravure printing is engraving the image from the surface of the plate making technology. The process flow is as follows: preparation before printing → plate loading → regulation adjustment → formal printing → post printing. In these processes, some pollutants will be produced. The main pollutants are noise, solid waste, industrial waste gas and waste liquid.
Four kinds of pollutants and their sources in gravure printing are mainly from exhaust fan of printing machine, ventilation equipment of workshop, air compressor and other equipment; solid waste mainly comes from waste plastic printing film, waste machine cloth, waste ink barrel, etc.; industrial waste gas mainly comes from printing ink, adhesive, organic solvent, etc.; waste liquid mainly comes from waste ink and waste solvent. The main pollutant in the above four types of pollutants is organic waste gas, referred to as VOC. VOC is the abbreviation of volatile organic compounds. The World Health Organization (who, 1989) defines total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) as the general term of volatile organic compounds with melting point lower than room temperature and boiling points between 50 and 260 ℃. The VOC emission characteristics of gravure printing are mainly ethyl acetate, isopropanol, butanone, toluene, propylene acetate, etc. Compared with other printing methods, the ink used in gravure printing has the lowest viscosity and the fastest drying speed. Gravure printing ink is composed of solid resin, volatile solvent, pigment, filler and auxiliary agent, etc. In order to reduce the ink viscosity, gravure printing ink needs to be diluted with matching diluents, most of which are lipid, alcohol and ketone solvents. Ethyl acetate, isopropanol and butanone are common diluents. The amount of diluent added is related to the actual production conditions such as printing product requirements, printing workshop temperature and printing speed. Generally, ink manufacturers will provide three solvent ratios: fast drying, medium drying and slow drying.
